Maxi Grill Installation

Placement options and connections for the Maxi Grill in a Type I hood exhaust system.

Where it can go

The Maxi Grill installs in-line of the hood’s exhaust duct, almost anywhere along the run that has access to power, water and a drain. It can be:

  • installed inside or outside the building,
  • placed on the ground, or
  • suspended from a wall or ceiling.

Exhaust from the Type I hood enters the unit’s intake port and leaves through its exhaust port to the remaining duct, which must terminate to the outdoors.

What it needs

  • Power: single-phase 120 V, 60 Hz for the Maxi Grill 250 and 350; three-phase for the 400, 500 and 500 S. A certified electrician connects it to local code.
  • A ½” cold fresh water line, set to about 1 bar at the unit (install a pressure reducer if the supply is above 1.5 bar).
  • A direct drain line to a grease trap. Skimmed soot, particulate and grease are discharged here.
  • Duct connections sized for the hood’s exhaust airflow. Choose the model by CFM; see Choosing the Right Unit.
  • An exhaust fan with variable speed control, matched to the system’s total static pressure and airflow.

Outdoors, the Maxi Grill needs its insulated stainless steel protection panel.

Clearances

Per UL 1978 and NFPA 96: 18” to combustible, 3” to limited-combustible and 0” to non-combustible construction. On the service access side, which is used for filter removal and maintenance, leave 36” (Maxi Grill 250), 40” (350 and 500) or 45” (400 and 500 S).

Shop drawings and start-up

Each model has a left-hand and a right-hand shop drawing (the side the service panel is on, viewed from the inlet), with dimensions, clearances, plumbing, electrical and fan notes for the engineer of record. The Maxi Grill start-up and commissioning guide covers first start-up. Download them, the wiring diagrams and the full manual from the downloads page. More answers in the installation FAQ.

Who installs it

A mechanical contractor or HVAC installer recognized and certified by the local Authority Having Jurisdiction for commercial kitchen grease duct installations must install and connect the unit. Coordinate with your hood and fire-suppression contractors during design.
