Where it can go
The Smoke Zapper is flexible about location. It can be:
- mounted to a wall,
- set on the floor,
- placed outside the building, or
- added in-line of an existing chimney stack as an upgrade (retrofit).
Wherever it sits, the unit connects in-line of the chimney: smoke from the appliance enters the intake port, and cleaned vapor leaves the exhaust port to the rest of the chimney or directly to atmosphere. The duct system must terminate to the outdoors.
What it needs
- A chimney connection matching the model: 8” (Smoke Zapper 200), 10” (250) or 12” (300). See Choosing the Right Unit.
- A ½” cold fresh water line, set to about 1 bar at the unit (install a pressure reducer if the supply is above 1.5 bar).
- A 1½” direct drain to a grease trap. Soot and particulate leave through the drain.
- Single-phase 120 V, 60 Hz power, connected by a certified electrician.
Clearances
Per UL 1978 and NFPA 96: 18” to combustible, 3” to limited-combustible and 0” to non-combustible construction. Leave 36” on the service access side and 36” above the unit for access to the water tank.
Shop drawings
Each model has a left-hand and a right-hand shop drawing (the side the service panel is on, viewed from the inlet), with dimensions, clearances, plumbing, electrical and fan notes for the engineer of record. Download them, the wiring diagram and the full manual from the downloads page. More answers in the installation FAQ.
Who installs it
Installation and connection must be done by a mechanical contractor or HVAC installer recognized and certified by your local Authority Having Jurisdiction for commercial kitchen grease duct work. Your installer should confirm local code requirements, including any permits.
Retrofits
Smoki® USA has supplied units for retrofit installations across North America. Retrofits take more planning than systems designed around a Smoki® unit from the start, so involve us early — we’ll review the existing chimney with your contractor. See completed retrofits on the references page.
